Sepal

One of the outer perianth segments, sometimes similar to a petal (e.g. tulips) but often green and leaf like. One of the divisions of the calyx, or outer whorl of a flower. A modified leaf that forms the covering of a flower bud. However, in some species the sepals are brightly colored and resemble petals (e.g. clematis).
