Scarification/Scarify
A method of deliberately wounding a seed to allow water to enter. To scratch, nick or break the hard coat of some seeds, so they will germinate easily. Fine sandpaper, using a small file, scissors or just soaking the seed overnight will work. Some seeds that benefit from this are Morning Glory (Ipomoea spp.), and Four O'Clocks (Mirabilis jalapa).
