Legume
A plant of the family leguminosae which bears a pod that splits along its two seams and releases the enclosed seeds upon maturity.

Additional Information
Legumes possess root nodules containing nitrogen-fixing bacteria that allow these plants to use atmospheric nitrogen, reducing the need for nitrogen fertilizer and improving soil fertility.
