Espalier

The method of training a tree or shrub to grow in a flat pattern, against a wall, on wires, or a fence; usually with the horizontal branches in tiers.

Often pear and apple trees are trained this way ( to increase productivity), while ornamental shrubs are employed for space efficiency and special effect. Any espalier makes an excellent garden focal points. This term is of French origin.
