Companion Planting
The act of planting two different plants within close proximity of each other with the belief that traits from each plant will benefit the other.

Additional Information
This term is used in relation to both perennials and vegetables. It has been part of the folklore in gardening and orcharding in many cultures for many years. In reference to perennials that would mean combining plants that make a colorful, showy/contrasting display or providing pollination. The vegetable reference would mean planting tomatoes with basil as it is said they are complimentary.
