Colchicine

A toxic chemical used to double the number chromosomes in seeds.

Made from the bulblike corm of autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale), colchicine is a powerful inducer of polyploidy. Polyploidy in plants has tremendous commercial applications because they typically produce larger flowers and fruits. Many of the fruits and vegetables sold at supermarkets are polyploid varieties.
