A modified and often scale like leaf, with or without a stem, usually located at the base of a flower.

Often confused with the flower itself, a fruit, or a cluster of flowers or fruits ("flowers" of the dogwood (Cornus florida) , Poinsettia and Bougainvillea are actually bracts) surrounding the tiny, central flowers.
