Balled and burlap, a method in which plants are sold where the roots of a plant have been dug up with the soil carefully maintained around its roots and wrapped in burlap (or plastic-backed burlap) to keep it together until transplanted. Large trees and shrubs are often sold this way. Wire cages are also commonly placed over the burlap, especially for large trees.
